The cover letter outline! If you are stuck or wondering where to start in writing an excellent cover letter, worry not. This article will serve as a guide in teaching you how to write the perfect cover letter for the job.

What are a cover letter and top outline?

A cover letter refers to a document that is submitted alongside the resume. It is generally one page and serves to introduce you as well as provide a summary of your professionalism. Usually, the main aim of writing a cover letter is to convince the hiring manager that you are competent for the job. A well-written cover letter outline sparks the human resource manager’s interest and draws them to read the resume. On the other hand, a poorly-written cover letter discourages the manager from going through your resume, consequently lowering your chances of getting the job.

1. Start with a header and then insert the following

  • full name
  • contact information such as phone number and email address
  • date
  • name or the professional title of the hiring manager
  • name of the company you are applying to

2. Greet the hiring manager

3. Write a good introduction

The introduction is the first paragraph and is what will keep the manager going through the entire document. This means that it has to grab the attention of the reader. Show that you are interested in the job that you are applying for. You may refer to the job description to show that you are suitable for the job. 4. Explain why you are suitable for the job

In the following two or three paragraphs, briefly state how your previous work experience has equipped you for the job. Be detailed and show how the specific qualifications in the job description relate to your past job. For instance, if the job description calls for a person with high proficiency in Information Technology, describe how you used IT in your previous job. In a few sentences, You may also include a success metric or story, such as your brilliant idea that increased the profitability or efficiency of the previous company you worked at.

Convince the HR manager that you are the best fit for the company. To do this, do research on the company to find out what the company is about. Then, having known more of the company, see what you like about them and convert that into text. For example, you could write that you are passionate about their services or goods and admire their innovative or independent work. Just make sure that your research on the company is thorough in getting the right reasons for applying.

In general, these two or three paragraphs form the body of the cover letter outline. They should thus encompass why you are the right candidate for the job and why you are passionate about joining the company you are applying to.

5. Write a conclusion

In the final paragraph, thank the hiring manager for taking the time to read through your cover letter. It is a fantastic idea to bring the cover letter to a finish by requesting a call to action. Express that you are hoping to hear from them soon.

6. Sign off

Use the proper formal closure to sign off. Before you sign your name, use either of the following:

  • Thank you
  • Sincerely
  • Best regards
  • Kind regards

Other important things to note

Now that the cover letter is done, it is not entirely ready for submission. Proofread it to check for errors. Reading the letter aloud is an effective way to identify the mistakes. Note that if you are sending a hard copy of the cover letter outline, formatting is crucial. Formatting errors such as lines that are not correctly indented could cost you the job.
